Welcome to Taman Budaya Indonesia PittsburghPhoto of TBIP by Jawa Pos*
Our mission is to establish a forum that promotes Javanese Gamelan in Pittsburgh area and its surroundings.
Gamelan is an ensemble of various traditional musical instruments from Java. The gamelan we focus on is from Central Java, in particular Surakarta (Solo) and Jogjakarta (Jogja). The TBIP gamelan is unique since it was built in house by a gamelan teacher from Solo when he was visiting his son in Pittsburgh, PA. The materials for the gamelan such as the brass plates, woods, etc were purchased from construction stores in Monroeville area. The tuning of the instruments was performed by the teacher in a qualitative manner. However, it was very close to the correct tuning after the tone was checked using an instrument. The photo above is taken by the Java Pos News Network, a well known news broadcaster in Indonesia, when they were accompanying a group of high school students who visited the US. |
