Welcome to the Indonesian Cultural Center of PittsburghGaruda*
Our mission is to establish an educational forum and a showcase of a variety of cultures from many different ethnicity of Indonesia in Pittsburgh. Many of Indonesian cultural organizations with similar objectives are established in big cities in the United States. Our goal is to become a cultural center that serves western Pennsylvania, East Ohio, and West Virginia regions.
Currently, the center is a house for a gamelan ensemble named Taman Budaya Indonesia Pittsburgh (TBIP) and an educational website that informs the richness culture of Java, Indonesia (Javanese Studies). Garuda is the symbol of the Republic of Indonesia that represent strength and bravery. The bird is holding a banner that says "Bhineka Tunggal Ika" which loosely speaking means "Unity in Diversity". The phrase identifies the pluralistic nature of the country but yet can get united under the same nation of Indonesia. The figure below shows the diversity in some traditional costumes that currently still exist in the country. |
